Overview:-
Azerbaijan State Medical University was founded on the basis of the Medical faculty of the Azerbaijan (Baku) State University in June 19, 1930. Azerbaijan State Medical Institute had got the status of University since February 5, 1991. This grand scientific centre has laid the strong foundation of the educational system, as well as given prominent scientists to the medical science worldwide. AMU has prepared more than 63,000 fully qualified doctors and pharmacists both for Azerbaijan Republic and for many countries in the world. Quantitative and qualitative indices of the AMU on preparing skilled doctors and medical scientists are comparable to those of some leading countries. Today, the functioning of University clinics, as well as the advanced reinforcement of the material and technical basis has brought about a fundamental change in the direction of improving the quality of medical education to satisfy the needs and expectance of labor market. Azerbaijan Medical University has got an administrative building, 6 teaching buildings, scientific-research centre, student canteen and buffets, health resort, a publishing house and newspaper, big sport complex with swimming pool, fundamental library and laboratories. More than 7 thousands students are studying at the 7 faculties, such as General Medicine 1 and 2, Pediatrics, Medico-Prophylactic and Medico-Biological, Dentistry, Pharmacological, Military Medicine. There are more than 1000 foreign students from 21 countries. Teaching staff of the University includes 3 Members of the Academy of Sciences (Academicians), 4 Associate Members of Sciences (Associated Academicians), 138 doctors of sciences (DM), 1150 PhD-s, 18 honored scientific workers, 22 honored doctors, 5 honored high school workers. All of them take part in pedagogical and scientific activity at 75 departments of the Medical University. Study in University carries out on 3 languages (Azeri, English and Russian). Azerbaijan Medical University is the member of Trans-European cooperation between European Union, Central and Eastern European and Eastern Asia countries on TEMPUS program in the sphere of Higher Education. The University regularly carries out academic exchange and scientific research cooperation with over 30 universities and institutions from over 20 foreign countries. In 1996, the University was registered to International Register of World Supreme Institutions Association. AMU became the full member of European Universities Association in 2002 and is full member of the Black Sea Universities Network. AMU has recently got new 3 Clinical University Hospitals, such as Therapeutic (since 2010), Oncology (since 2007), Dental (since 2002). The General Surgery Hospital for 500 beds - the biggest university hospital in South Caucasus, is under construction and is going to be ready at 2013. All of these hospitals are fully equipped for treatment and teaching in order to get the world-comparable results in the all fields of medicine. The Study Program is under continuous modernization being stimulated and inspired by modern scientific investigations and European standards (Bologna Process, since 2005, TEMPUS projects)
